Drinking with the dead in Ljubljana.

Crap, I forgot to mention this: on Friday night we met up with our friend Iva, who is from Ljubljana and studied at my home university, to get some drinks and catch up since she's been traveling through Asia for the last month.

She took us to a bar half-hidden on a small street in the Old Town, where you go down a flight of stairs with skeletons and dusty books decorating the walls (in fact, the bathrooms are behind a "secret passage:" a door made to look like a bookshelf), you enter a basement with more skeletons on the walls in display cases, and one was in a cage. A little corny, yeah, but there was an enthusiastic vibe. Mostly young folks there, but whatever.

Lisa and Iva ordered something called Sex in a Disabled Bathroom and I had a Skeleton's Tears . . . well, actually, I had two because the cocktails there are two-for-one. Next time I'm having (two) Bloody Orgasms. You may read that in any context you wish.

Haunted house motif? Cheap drinks with borderline obscene names? Two-for-one? Yes, please. This city has a great bar scene. There's one on most streets, they're open late and the prices are decent. I get a twinge of sadness when I know there are probably a hundred drinking establishments I will have to leave unexplored.

So, locals and regular visitors, any bar suggestions?

For an excellent cappuccino in a nautical setting go to "Geonavtik", at the corner of Slovenska and Šubičeva (the red building).

You've probably already been to Cutty Sark Pub, but if you're ever there on a Saturday night, find the DJ and give me a nugde :D

Thanks for the suggestions, Pengovsky! I haven't checked out the Cutty Sark, but I've passed by it many times and felt compelled to walk in. I'll be sure to come by on a Saturday night and see what's happening. :D

In the words of Bill and Ted: "Excellent!" :D

Pengovsky is horribly biased towards Cutty Sark, so let me list a few. :) Depends what you're looking for, but - as you've noticed - there are many, many bars in Ljubljana. My personal best (ranging in the mood I'm in) would be Skelet, Slamič, Le Petit Cafe, Salon, Global OUTSIDE, Geonavtik, Corso, all outside bars east of City Hall in the summertime, Makalonca in the summertime (when it's open anyway) ... I'm sure I forgot at least some. :)

My dear Iva... You've been around the world, but geography still escapes you :)) East of City Hall there is virtually nothing... Just Sokol Inn. I'm sure you meant west :) Or south-by-southwest, if you want to nitpick :)))

Also note that 3/4 of the bars you listed are only applicable in the summertime (when the weather is fine), Cutty Sark however is good all year round :)

But we do agree on Geonavtik, which pleases me immensly :D

Dude, no, I insist on East! :) If you position yourself in front of the Zoki mansion (aka City Hall), and look right - that's east. :D At least in my world!
Anyways, cut the crap, my fav bars are almost all open all year round :P How does wintertime affect Slamič, Skelet, Le Petit, Corso or Salon? Geez, Pengovsky darling, I think our next drinking crawl should include all of the above mentioned bars to show you how right I am ... :P (not in political sense, tho, haha!)

I'm sure that if you start down Mestni trg, Stari Trg, Novi trg and then Prule and just keep walking, you will eventually reach Far East. But only because Eatrh is round, baby ;)

As far as the bars you mentioned: Don't know where Corso is, Salon - I grant you that, whereas both Le Petit and Slamič are sexy only during the summer. Besides - neither serves Gunniess :)

I think questions of geography can only be settled definitively by the copious consumption of alcohol.

How about we all meet and try every bar you guys mentioned, and I will provide assessment forms we can fill out and compare notes? ;)

Of course, by the end of the evening, who really wants to do the paperwork?
